CRANK UP THE VCR:
'Foyle's War' returns to probe mysteries of wartime morality (David Wiegand, September 10, 2005, SF Chronicle)
"Foyle's War," so often among the most intelligent and well-written mysteries on television, slips a bit in its third series, which begins Sunday night on KQED with a story called "The French Drop." That said, it's also true that even a flawed "Foyle's War" beats most other TV mysteries in a slow crawl.
The first two series are available at Netflix and are terrific. Posted by Orrin Judd at September 11, 2005 8:25 AM
But note that also tonight Turner Classic Movies is showing the rarely-seen masterpiece The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, one of the all-time great British films.

I've been trying to see it for twenty years, but we don't have Turner....
Posted by: oj at September 11, 2005 2:36 PMWe Netflixed the first episode and enjoyed it--but not quite enough to get the rest. We'll check out this tonight. We've just about finished the Sharpe series, so maybe we'll start up Foyle again if it agrees with us.

I've been watching Sharpe too. There's a great scene in the first where the two Spanish brothers duel, the one representing reason and the French Revolution, the other representing religion and tradition.
Posted by: oj at September 11, 2005 6:22 PMOJ: It's on DVD, and I'm sure you'd love it.
Posted by: PapayaSF at September 11, 2005 6:27 PMYes, but I doubt I'd enjoy the taste of my own entrails, which The Wife would feed me if I spent $40 on a DVD. I'm hoping Netflix adds it to their rota.

Thanks for pointing it out. I watched the first half of it last night. Looking forward to the last hour or so tonight.
OJ: you should do whatever needs be done to get Turner. It really is the best thing going on tv (that isn't soccer related). There' s something of interest on virtually everyday.
