German Cannibal Gets Nearly Nine Years in Prison (AP, January 30, 2004)

A German who confessed to killing, dismembering and eating another man who allegedly agreed to the arrangement over the Internet was convicted Friday of manslaughter and sentenced to 8 1/2 years in prison.

The "Nearly" in the headline is a nice touch, eh?

Explaining the verdict, the presiding judge said Meiwes' intention was not evil but "the fulfillment of his fantasy."

Earlier today, 1010 WINS here in NYC had the headline "That's a Spicy Meatball!", along with a picture of spaghetti and meatballs. Apparently, the story had something to do with this guy's co-workers having been served meatballs by him and their understandable concerns about the meal. How cute!

They couldn't give him the death penalty . . . the whole "last meal" thing would've been just too creepy.

My first reaction was that the sentence was light. Then I recalled that the Hague tribunal is handing out terms of a few hours per murder and I changed my mind. What a savage punishment!
