TIME TO RETIRE THE SUSAN SONTAG AWARD
Not Dead Yet: An Apology (Andrew Sullivan, The Advocate, 7/5/05)
I'm sorry. At the tender age of 41 ‹ a year longer than I once thought I would live ‹ I have never felt better. HIV transformed my life, made me a better and braver writer, prompted me to write the first big book pushing marriage rights, got me to take better care of my health, improved my sex life, and deepened my spirituality.Self-deception raised to an art form. "HIV . . . improved my sex life . . . ."
Sontag Award, hell! That's Darwin Award material!

To live like you were dyin'."
What's with gay men and martyr complexes -- can't any of them talk, think, or write about anything other than themselves? Sullivan approaches every issue entirely self-referentially, as does almost all gay art and literature - its always about the artist. Gay men can't see beyond the tip of their own penis.
Posted by: Shelton at July 18, 2005 01:27 PMThis is so. . ., so gay, as to be embarassing.
Posted by: Lou Gots at July 18, 2005 01:45 PMI'm reminded of Dave Chappelle's remark after noting how good Magic Johnson looks: "I've got to get me some of that AIDS".

In Sullivans case, I don't think his other organs have a spot in his concerns.
But doesn't that tell us everything we need to know.
Posted by: Robert Schwartz at July 18, 2005 04:36 PMUm, is this the same guy who was pushing the idea of gay marriage so hard so gays would stop doing what he now claims to be having so much fun doing?
Posted by: Peter B at July 18, 2005 06:54 PMIt would seem that HIV is affecting one major organ in his body.
Posted by: jim hamlen at July 18, 2005 11:53 PMDoes anyone else think that castration might have achieved the same effect?
Posted by: ratbert at July 19, 2005 12:16 AMPeter B:
He's also written about the need for monogamous gay relationships while simultaneously writing about the sense of "spirituality" one gets through anonymous encounters in bathhouses.
Posted by: Matt Murphy at July 19, 2005 12:45 AMAnd I'm a better person because of that time I rammed my head into a wall. It made me appreciate how good life is when you don't ram your head into a wall.
