THIS STORY MAY RUN UNTIL NO STEREOTYPE IS LEFT UNFILLED:

Man in N.J. Gov. Case Says He Is Straight (The Associated Press, Aug. 15, 2004)

The Israeli man at the center of New Jersey Gov. James E. McGreevey's resignation over a gay affair said in an interview published Sunday that he is straight and had no idea initially that his former boss is a homosexual.

Golan Cipel told the Israeli daily newspaper Yediot Ahronot that McGreevey repeatedly made unwanted sexual advances. Cipel said he informed the governor at one point that he planned to sue him for sexual harassment, and lawyers were negotiating a settlement when McGreevey resigned last week.

"It doesn't bother me that it is said I am gay, but I really am not. I'm straight. On the other hand, to accuse me of being an extortionist? Someone here has lost his mind," Cipel was quoted as telling Yediot.

Hey, for a $100k makework job a lot of us straight folk would hop on the down low.

Cipel's morality problem goes beyond what his sexual preferences are or are not. You would think of all people, an Israeli citizen would understand the threat of Islamic terrorism enough so that they would not agree to a make-work job in the first place when the job in question involves homeland security, the state in question is located just across the Hudson from Manhattan and the time in question is seven months after the Sept. 11 attacks.

Since Cipel supposedly is a poet, McGreevey would have been better off just appointing him as replacement for Amiri Baraka as New Jersey's poet lauriete following the controversy over his World Trade Center prose after the 9/11 attacks. That would have been a more appropriate post than leading the state's anti-terror efforts, though paying $110,000 a year to a poet would have raised a few eyebrows on its own.
